Birds & wildlife

75 different bird species & a private bird hide.

With an ever increasing number of bird species, alongside mammals such as fox, badger, weasel, stoat and hedgehog, there is plenty to see and experience on the farm. The river Irfon on our doorstep extends these opportunities, with otters, Atlantic Salmon and dippers, and a little further afield, there is even Whale watching and beavers.

Although walking around the farm is a great way to see birdlife, we also have a dedicated bird hide for guests who want to get a closer look. Bird species vary according to the seasons, so depending when you are visiting you might see pied flycatcher, lesser redpoll, cuckoo, blackcap, tree pipit, fieldfare, redstart, snipe along with permanent residents, such as green and great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch, finches and tits. If you’re lucky, you might even experience a sparrow hawk flyby, spot a Barn owl emerging from their roost or a pair of Kites tangling in the sky.

Hedgehog, badger, fox, stoat, weasel, roe deer, field mouse, mole, shrew, common pipistrelle and hare are just some of the animals we’ve seen at Lofftwen. Although many are shy and often only come out at night, being creatures of habit they leave tracks through the long grasses, perfect for placing camera traps. We have camera traps we can loan if you would like to set some traps during your stay and see what’s going on while you sleep. It’s a great way to get the kids involved and an added incentive for exploring the farm. Of course, we cannot guarantee you will capture anything, but we can suggest some good spots, or you can just try your luck. Who knows what you might find.

The river Irfon snakes past Lofftwen’s southern boundary bringing even more wildlife to our doorstep, including otters, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, freshwater pearl mussels and white clawed crayfish. The river also supports populations of exciting birds such as king fisher, dipper, sand martin, grey heron and sandpiper. Heading a little further afield to Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve you can see beaver and osprey, and then towards the coastlines of Aberystwyth whales and dolphins.
